I have had several different floor coverings in the kitchen over the years. Early in my marriage I had lovely braided rugs and loom rugs that were gifts. I am not the type of person that can own “beautiful to look at but hard to keep clean” things. It’s honestly why we have leather couches. Then I purchased spongey professional kitchen mats. They fit in the “easy to keep clean but not much to look at” category.
Last year we redid our kitchen and I knew what I wanted for the floors – washable rugs. They come in every pattern imaginable. Ours in a wide runner that fits in the section between the sink and dishwasher and the island (which houses the garbage and the recycling). It gets a lot of food dropped on it. The rug is comfortable to stand on, very durable, and best of all MACHINE WASHABLE!!
Every week or so I pull it up and throw it in the washing machine. Then I vacuum and do a quick mop and then (after the rug is dried IN THE DRYER!) I lay the rug back down. I don’t have to take it outside and shake it, or beat it with a stick, or spray it with a hose and leave it outside to dry for hours. I have done all of these things and felt like I was living in Little House the whole time. I finally feel like I am in the 21st century with the rest of my friends.
The pattern I have has been discontinued (super sad face since I really like it and wanted to get another) but there are so many that you will find something you like!
